Helena's Charity Work

As well as working, taking photos down the pub and teaching undergrads, I spend some time indulging my hippy-er side!

I heard about the work and philosophy of Dr Albert Schweitzer through my Dad (who wrote a highly acclaimed biography of the man), and through him I met the people who run Dr Schweitzer's Hospital Fund. Over the past few years I have been involved in the development of a new charity - Friends of Albert Schweitzer (UK) - of which I am a trustee, and through which we aim to promote the philosophy of Reverence for Life. Recently we completed a "Reverence for Life" garden in a primary school. Piccies can be seen here.

My less hippy-ish tendencies allow me to cherish my Rover 100. Not exactly a gas-guzzling monster, but not in the electric car category either! While driving around, however, I decided that I wanted to reduce as much as possible my chances of hitting things - be they human, animal, inanimate or, indeed, frutescent! So I took up advanced driving and passed my test with a silver. Now I am volunteering to teach others, in an effort to make the roads even safer! So if you fancy driving around being gently criticized by a blonde female, get in touch with Cambridgeshire Advanced Drivers.
